Chapter Six

Shea

Shea: How was your taste test?

Shea: I love potato skins

Shea: Brielle? You alright?

◆◆◆

Shea hadn’t heard from Brielle in over an hour. He wasn’t worried, she often dropped off the grid for an hour here and there. It was a lot of work, planning a wedding, and she had the added responsibility of also choosing the right husband. Shea tried to give her some space.

An hour turned into two hours and he was growing anxious. They would be sitting down to watch the decision video soon and he would feel better hearing from her before he watched it.

Matthew popped his head into the room where Shea was laying on the bed. Shea jumped when he heard him walk in, he was afraid it was Carl coming back to intimidate him again. He was still pissed Carl had woken him up from a nap like that. He was a real jerk, Shea had no idea what Brielle saw in him and hoped it was Carl being sent home that afternoon.

That was the risk of marrying someone you’ve never met in person until your wedding. Not everyone abides by the honor system. Shea presented himself through the device as he was in real life but he doubted Carl did the same. He worried about Brielle and what lies she was being told but it wasn’t his place to step in.

“This is it.” Matthew sat on the bed next to Shea.

Shea was confused. “What do you mean? We don’t know anything for sure.”

“Yeah, I do. I know I’m going home. I barely talk to her. We exchange words a few times a day but nothing like I see everyone else doing. I’m going home. I know it.”

He shook his head. “You can’t be so sure. She could send me home. You never know.”

“I know. And it’s fine, I’m ok with it. I just came by to say goodbye. You know, not near the other guys.”

“It’s been good getting to know you. We’ll have to exchange numbers for real so we can keep in touch, You’re good people.” Shea was a bit sad. Matthew was his only friend in the apartment and with him gone, he didn’t know what he would do with his time.

“Definitely.” They gave each other a quick hug with a pat on the back.

Mark’s voice interrupted their goodbye through the loud speaker. “Can everyone report to the living room, please?”

Matthew took a deep breath. “Well, this is it.”

They got to the couch before Carl did. He glared at them from the corner of the room, where he was leaning against the wall. Carl liked to lay on the couch and not let anyone else go near it. Shea would be happy when he never had to see Carl’s face again.

“You know the drill. Video’s ready. Any questions?” Mark looked around the room, bored.

Brielle’s face filled the screen. She was beautiful. Shea had been daydreaming about her face walking towards him all afternoon. She’d look beautiful in her wedding dress and Shea knew they’d have an amazing life together.
